The opportunity to paint in public spaces isa great responsibility. After completion, I leave the artwork to a local community who interacts and engages with it on a daily bases. Unlike wall murals, ground murals offer a unique mode of interactions, as people walk on or around them, viewing the artwork(s) from other angles.
Before conceiving the artwork, I explored the neighbourhood the only way I could long-distance: using google street view. I noticed the numerous shops and their signs together a shared infrastructure. This inspired me to create an artwork dissected into diverse shapes filled with abstract lines. My distinctive palette of six vibrant colours, style and use of visual elements unify the many street spot fragments of entire artworks.
The title "1Fluss" in german is as multifaceted as the neighbourhood itself. It can be interpreted as "one river", reflecting how the artworks flows through different streets. It also translates to "flow" symbolizing the flow state of pedestrians and traffic, as well as the one I aimed to achieve while working.
Lastly "1Fluss" pronouced "Einfluss" also means "influence". Global American pop culture greatly influenced my upbringing. In the 90s everything " cool" seemed to originate from the US, from skateboarding and fashion to music. With this project, I hope to infuse that inital influence with a hint of austrian culture into Downtown Brooklyn's streets, brightening up resident's daily lives, adding an extra spring to their steps.
